Correlation Between Self-Esteem as a Psychological Factor and Narcissistic Behavior of Students on Instagram Social
Main Article Content
Abstract
Narcissistic behavior among adolescents has become increasingly prominent along with the intensive use of visually oriented social media, particularly Instagram, which emphasizes social evaluation and public recognition. Within the context of adolescent development, such conditions may influence self-esteem dynamics and patterns of self-presentation in digital spaces. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and narcissistic behavior among students who actively use Instagram. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving 43 tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Prabumulih selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using self-esteem and narcissistic behavior questionnaires and analyzed using Pearson correlation with SPSS version 27. The results indicated that both self-esteem and narcissistic behavior were predominantly at a moderate level. Inferential analysis revealed a positive and significant relationship between self-esteem and narcissistic behavior (r = 0.484; p < 0.05). These findings suggest that self-esteem in adolescents may coexist with narcissistic tendencies as a form of self-presentation and social validation strategy on Instagram. The study provides important implications for school guidance and counseling services in designing interventions that foster adaptive self-esteem in the digital era.
