Analysis of Factors Underlying Career Anxiety (A Case Study of Students at SMA Islam Athirah 1 Makassar)

Abstract

The transition to higher education often triggers career anxiety, which hinders students' career decision-making. This study aims to analyze the factors underlying career anxiety in a 12th-grade student with the initials AT at SMA Islam Athirah 1 Makassar. The study used a qualitative approach with an instrumental case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation using source triangulation techniques involving guidance counselors, homeroom teachers, and parents. Data analysis included data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that career anxiety is triggered by the interaction between internal factors in the form of cognitive distortions and low self-efficacy, and external factors dominated by pressure from parental expectations that are not aligned with personal interests and the influence of the social environment. This study confirms that career anxiety is not simply a matter of personal doubt, but rather the result of social pressure. The scientific contribution of this study lies in identifying patterns of cognitive distortions in AT students, which can serve as a basis for guidance counselors to design more adaptive and sustainable cognitive-based career guidance interventions.
