Abstract

Research aim: This study focuses on the analysis of the business conditions of semi-intensive home-scale laying duck farming in Rubae Village, Pinrang Regency, in order to formulate a sustainable and competitive business development strategy.

Design/ Methods/ Approach: A qualitative approach with a case study design focused on a semi-intensive home-scale duck farming venture. Data collection was carried out through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using a SWOT approach combined with IFAS, EFAS, and Internal–External (IE) Matrix.

Research Findings: The results show that internal strength factors are more dominant than weaknesses, and external opportunities are greater than threats. The mapping in the IE Matrix places efforts in Quadrant I, which indicates that growth strategies are the most appropriate strategy to be developed through the utilization of internal strengths and available external opportunities.

Theoretical Contribution/Originality: This study provides a theoretical contribution by integrating the analysis of SWOT, IFAS–EFAS, and IE Matrix in the context of a home-scale duck farming business based on local resources. This study enriches the study of the development of MSMEs in the people's livestock sector by emphasizing local specific internal advantages as the basis for business growth strategies.

Practical Implications: The results of the research can be used as a basis for decision-making for home-scale duck farmers in developing business development strategies, as well as a reference for local governments in designing mentoring, counseling, and policy support programs for smallholder farms.

Research Limitations: The limitations of this study lie in the scope of the location that is only carried out in one village and the use of a qualitative approach, so that the results of the study cannot be generalized wide.
