Lumpur merah atau red mud adalah limbah yang dihasilkan dari pengolahan bauksit menjadi alumina. Limbah ini seringkali dibuang atau disimpan tanpa diproses atau dimanfaatan secara optimal sehingga dapat menimbulkan permasalah lingkungan kemudian hari. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pemanfaatan limbah lumpur merah dengan paduan kaolin, abu sekam dan pasir kuarsa yang merupan sumber daya alam lokal Kalimantan Barat, untuk dapat dijadikan bahan refraktori. Tantangan dari penelitian ini yaitu menentukan variasi dalam komposisi kaolin, abu sekam dan pasir kuarsa dalam mempengaruhi sifat fisik dan termal dari bahan refraktori yang dihasilkan. Metode penelitian meliputi menganalisis komposisi kimia dan fisik limbah lumpur merah, menguji sampel dari variasi bahan paduan tersebut, serta melakukan pengujian sifat mekanik dan termal. Luaran dari penelitian ini adalah pengembangan bahan refraktori yang efisien dan ramah lingkungan, serta publikasi hasil penelitian dalam jurnal ilmiah. Studi ini berharap tidak hanya memberikan solusi untuk masalah limbah, tetapi juga mengurangi ketergantungan pada impor bahan baku refraktori di Indonesia dengan pemanfaatan sumber daya alam lokal Kalimantan Barat.
